'Is It Even a City?'

Oslo is so-so.
by Andrew MacGregor

Halfdan is a thirty-one-year-old man who lives in the Norwegian capital Oslo. Lucky him, right? Halfdan hates the place, as it turns out, and struggles to understand why anyone would want to visit. Not the man you would expect to front a Visit Oslo commercial, then.

The man sounds just like a one-star TripAdvisor review and is all the better for it. "Everything is just so… available," he says, wary of the lack of queues wherever he goes. In fact, he's more likely to see the prime minister or the king in the street than wait for a table in a restaurant.

You can swim in the middle of the city, walk from one side to another in half an hour, and get up close and personal with Edvard Munch's 'The Scream'—all to the chagrin of Halfdan. "It's not exactly the ‘Mona Lisa,"' he says of the latter, so, er, take that, Edvard!

By the end, viewers have plenty of reasons not to visit Oslo. If this understated gem of a tourist film works too well and the city ends up overcrowded like Venice, Barcelona, and Dubrovnik, Halfdan may need to use reverse-reverse psychology.
