'Leave the Cult, Join the Club'
18 September 2024 50s
Should I stay or should I go?
by Andrew MacGregor

'Ode to Joy' from Beethoven's Ninth Symphony propels this Virgin Active spot about the cult of fitness. Dodgy diets, sketchy supplements, insidious influencers… the brand have seen too many people get taken in by total cults, so to speak, and it's time to cut them off for good.

That means no more calls to 1-800-WELLNESS and no more electrical muscle stimulation devices (keen-eyed viewers will spot the small print that reads: "Results may vary—in fact, results may not happen at all"). It reminds DAVID of a cursed spot for Six Pad with Cristiano Ronaldo.

If the first half is a cult film, then the second half is a 'club' film. Egotism and snake oil are replaced with exercise, camaraderie, and sweat, as Virgin Active insist real efforts beats fake news hands down.
