Good riddance... not in a bad way.
by Andrew MacGregor

This commercial from DDB Paris, DDB Berlin, and director Terence Neale celebrates fifty years of Golf—the car, not the sport. Launched in 1974 to replace the Beetle (Herbie and the gang lived on though), the Golf is a VW mainstay. Wherever the protagonist goes, it goes.

She leaves for university in one, starts a family in one, and teaches her daughter to drive in one ("Don’t kill me!") before fifty years' worth of progress comes into sharp relief. Scored by Green Day's 'Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)', it’s the kind of montage that car makers love.

It lets them retreat to go forward, if you will, or revel in nostalgia before modern technology revs up. It looks like another love affair with VW has started by the end—not bad for a company mired in controversy less than ten years ago. Not the time of their life, that's for sure!
