New rules. | |
by Andrew MacGregor | |
|
As much as DAVID enjoyed the Olympics and Paralympics this summer, rules and regulations blurred together after a while. "Of course, that should have been ruled out!" "How was that illegal?" "You call yourself a referee? No? Sorry—you call yourself an umpire?" One brand, The North Face, reckon we should put the rule book back on the shelf. Why? Because it's not necessary "out here", where water, snow, ice, dirt, and rock are the opponents. What use are rules, meanwhile, in a battle between mind and matter? Spectacular mirror images convey how adventure often turns us into our own worst enemies. If that all sounds too serious-minded, fear not—'Like Sugar' by Chaka Khan becomes the song for those hooked on adrenaline. Khan sings, "When I feel the funk, I give in"; the cast give in when they feel one with the elements, cuts and scrapes be damned. These are the kind people The North Face exist for.
