Point me in the right direction.
by Andrew MacGregor

The point of this Telstra commercial is that it's pointless. Pointless to non-Telstra customers, that is. The brand just want to be honest in a world full of lies—only those who already get the best deals will get the most out of it. So, er, how does work in practice?

First, a young boy must collect water from a river with a rope and bucket. Second, he must walk all the way back up the hill to his pa, who tends the land like his father and his father before him. "Is this a pointless ad?" the boy asks, and the sage, meta response he gets is superb.

"Well, if you're not an existing Telstra customer, it is," says the farmer. "No one else is getting the best deals this month." It's a wry twist on FOMO, wrapped up with another piece of bad news for the boy: he might not even get paid for his troubles. What a load of buckets, eh?
