'Football Fever Starts Here'
12 June 2024 40s
A Wright two-and-eight.
by Andrew MacGregor

If you thought Ian Wright would take it easy after 'Match of the Day', think again. The sixty-year-old is a bona fide nutter in this Sports Direct commercial as he drives an ice cream van down the street. England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford has no idea what to make of him, but it's the other residents Wright has plans for.

His manic laugh and souped-up truck are the soundtrack to absolute bedlam: a boy's tracksuit top goes haywire; a bloke in a recliner crashes through the garage doors; and an elderly woman is supercharged by Adidas football boots. If you wanted a 99 instead, best wait for the real ice cream van to come along.

Director Ehsan and his crew are in no mood to hang around, though, and the chaos reaches fever pitch at the local, erm, football pitch. The highlight is a young goalkeeper who moves like Bruce Grobbelaar, Jerzy Dudek, and Andrew Redmayne rolled into one.
