'Tournament Turmoil'
4 June 2024 33s
International blues.
by Andrew MacGregor

With Euro 2024 on the way, fans can forget about the rigmarole of domestic football and focus on England instead. That means—Heaven forfend—putting club loyalties aside for a few weeks! Sky Bet know that's easier said than done, so they dedicate this commercial to conflicted fans up and down the country.

When the protagonist puts away his club shirt for the summer, the look on his face speaks volumes. Is he ready to cheer players he boos every week and vice versa? The way he turns off the car radio when his team ships a goal suggests not.

"Ah, well," says the narrator. "Four weeks and it's all back to normal," by which time the protagonist's St George's Cross chest hair will either have been shaved off in disgust or trimmed with pride. In the meantime, we hope to God this doesn't give Reform UK candidates any ideas.
