Winner Fights the Moon
by Andrew MacGregor

Lucas Jones writes, directs, and stars in this heartfelt drama about what prison does to a family. Arris (Jones) spent five years behind bars, with Lauren (Alina Allison) left to raise daughter Riley (Thea Evans) alone on the outside. A straightforward reunion was never on the cards, but all they can do is try.

Arris and Lauren had good times together. They laughed, played in the snow, and poured wine into each other's mouths. It's painful to hear them navigate the innocuous offer of a drink in the present day ("Nah, I'm alright, I'm sober now" "Yeah, not a drink, obviously").

Both want to make it work for Riley’s sake, and they do… but not for long. Trouble follows Arris wherever he goes, including a beach at dusk. The desperation in this scene is tangible, as the sun sets not only on the day, but also a family's delicate attempt at normality.
