All you need is love.
by Jason Stone

This film examining the practice of conversion therapy is a searing condemnation of social conservatism wherever it is found around the world. As it is a Brazilian film, it is inevitable that most viewers will consider it an especially damning verdict of what happens in a country that has something of an identity crisis when it comes to issues of diversity.

The frank depiction of the cruelty associated with conversion therapy during the 1940s offers a suggestion that these are practices disappeared long ago, but we discover by the end of the film that nothing could be further from the truth. Modern Brazilians (and those living in similarly conservative cultures) who happen to be gay can be subjected to the most appalling treatment, even today.

The mistreatment of trans men and trans women is even more invidious, and though not touched upon by this film, one feels certain that its makers would recognise that an even greater harm is being enacted upon this minority.

This is a stark reminder that social conservatism often targets the most vulnerable members of society, and that they are as deserving, if not more deserving, of our protection as everyone else.... even fiction writers obsessed with toilets.
