Spill omens.
by Andrew MacGregor

They say you should never throw the baby out with the bathwater—you should also never leave a baby alone with the bathwater. Alas, no one told the mum in this short film by director Stuart Langfield, who uses this uncomfortable set-up to explore climate change and what our children stand to inherit.

Mum (Izzy Kaban) leaves her baby on the floor in the bathroom as the bath fills with hot water. She must come back, right? The more Langfield and editor Jen Mackie cut between the baby and the water, the less likely that becomes. Viewers would love to reach in and turn off the tap themselves, but no dice.

Instead, they must watch the liquid trickle over and circle the baby. Framed as a message from a future voter, the bathwater becomes flood water, or what happens when sea levels rise to catastrophic levels. Tragedy is averted here, but only just.

To prevent tragedy on a global scale, viewers are encouraged to vote for those ready to save the planet, not sacrifice it. Many more tears will be shed otherwise.
