'Oyster'
14 August 2024 2 mins
Jack of all trades.
by Andrew MacGregor

'Oyster' was a labour of love for Kelsey Larkin in more ways than one. This two-minute short film is dedicated to her infant son, Jack, who may grow to be, say, an astronaut, a firefighter, a surgeon, a businessman, or… well, the possibilities are endless as far as the Canadian director's concerned. You might say Jack is a maybe baby.

The film itself cuts between Jack in the womb, as a blip on a screen, and the Jacks yet to come. Larkin's visuals are clever and complementary throughout, like when an umbilical cord becomes an umbilical cable and vice versa. It may take a few years for her son to appreciate what mum has done, but it should be worth the wait.
