Dance troupes are examples of herd mentality being used for good, where the beauty achieved by the different units of a whole moving together, creates something more dynamic and creatively impactful than its parts. This short film uses that idea as a base for powerful exploration of individual expression, by contrasting unison with moments of solo performances. Featuring MA students from the London Contemporary Dance School, the film explores the tension between a fundamental yet complicated aspect of being human, that of needing to wholeheartedly belong somewhere, while ultimately maintaining a sense of self. Dance is an effective medium in which to explore this, because though troupes put a lot of effort into connecting, moving and thinking as one, like any artistic form, dance is a very pure form of expression on a personal level. So even amongst the most dedicated of performers, there will always be a yearning to be seen as individuals, and that makes for interesting art.
