Caught in a trap. | |

The ICE men cometh in this gut-wrenching short film courtesy of David and Sam Cutler-Kreutz. It's the day of Oscar Gomez's (William Martinez) green card interview, with wife Sophie (Victoria Ratermanis) and daughter Nina (Koralyn Rivera) in tow. They have all the necessary documents, but Oscar is still 'undocumented'—that makes him vulnerable, even at this late stage of the process. The family are, in fact, ten minutes late for their appointment, which only adds to the tense, flustered atmosphere nurtured by the directors. Both Sophie and Oscar try to stay cool, but that goes out the window when ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) agents appear. Oscar, and others like him, are fish in a bureaucratic barrel. As far as the men in black are concerned, there are no right or wrong moves—whether Oscar tries to leave via the back door or co-operate, ICE want him in handcuffs. To one member of staff, he's just one of "so many Gomezs" to sift through. Somehow, with Sophie just feet away, Nina is deemed to be a matter for child services. Moments like this turn 'A Lien' into a horror movie under fluorescent lights, where death by a thousand paper cuts is not beyond the realms of possibility. Supers inform us that raids like this are real, and they can tear people apart better than any fictional monster.
