Turn off the dark.
by Andrew MacGregor

Not long after the RSPCA rebooted themselves in spectacular fashion, the charity present a commercial straight from the Disney playbook. Director Jack Brown and his team use traditional 2D animation for this 30" spot, though some might be tempted to reach out and stroke the protagonist regardless.

The animal in need is a boxer—not a fighter, but a victim of abuse and neglect. Chained to a wall with only a mouse for company, the dog fears the worst when the door opens. So does the viewer, in truth, as when is a shadow that big ever good news.

Rather than scar viewers for life, the ad shows what happens when the right person comes along at the right time. The dog's tears are almost too cartoony for comfort, but the result still conveys how important search and rescue missions like this are.
