Queensberry vs Matchroom
'5 v 5'
31 May 2024 4 mins 53s
The power of ten.
by Andrew MacGregor

When DAVID heard that Queensberry and Matchroom had organised a five-versus-five event boxing tournament, he pictured ten boxers in the ring at the same time à la the Royal Rumble. "Frank Warren and Eddie Hearn are geniuses!" he cried… then he learned it was just five one-on-one bouts in Riyadh. What a gyp.

To promote the June 1 event, agency Big Time Creative Shop and director Leigh Powis prove that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. If you like 'RocknRolla', 'Snatch', or 'Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels', have a butchers at this lengthy, lairy commercial that turns Warren and Hearn into well 'ard crime bosses, bless 'em.

Like a game of Testosterone Trumps, the pair draw cards that represent Matchroom and Queensberry boxers: Nick Ball (not that one!) is 'The Butcher', Filip Hrzgovic is 'The Taxi Driver', Deontay Wilder is 'The Bronze Bomber', and the list goes on. Each fighter then stars in cranked-up vignettes where blood is spilled, windows are smashed, and egos are massaged with gusto. Guy Ritchie may well shed a tear.
