Pop Tarts
'Unfrosted'
30 April 2024 2 mins 13s
The taste of revenge is sweet.
by Andrew MacGregor

Jerry Seinfeld's directorial debut, 'Unfrosted', is an unauthorised history of Pop-Tarts, the toaster pastries invented by Bill Post in 1964. Angry about the lack of consultation, brand 'president' Kelman P Gasworth hauls Seinfeld (or Sein-field) in for a chat about trademark infringement. With the comedian unfazed, Gasworth is forced to go nuclear.

Not only has he imprisoned Schmoopie, Jackie Chiles, and the Soup Nazi hostage, but he's also made his own spin on 'Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee' (er, 'People in Pontiacs Eating Pop-Tarts') and taken over Seinfeld's stand-up career to settle the score. Don’t expect Gasworth to get a Netflix special any time soon.

The result works three ways: it promotes the movie; it makes the brand feel a little better about the lack of editorial control; and it lets Seinfeld fire off a, well, pop shot at his old adversary, 'Friends'.

That's a lot for directors Speck and Gordon to chew on, but it goes down well. Whether it goes down well with the so-called extreme left is another story!
