'Finding Jade'
19 September 2024 90s
Kia ora from Scotland
by Melissa Roberts

‘Finding Jade’ is the first chapter in the ‘Let’s Get Connected’ campaign, directed by Steve Ayson with FCB Aotearoa for One New Zealand. As far as themes for tel-co brand messaging go, connection is nothing new. But with the angle being connection to your roots, and a distinctly Kiwi flavour, there are plenty of moments to keep this spot as fresh as a dip in the Pacific.

After Jade’s told he’s adopted (something he’d already pieced together when he realised the cool gene did not come from his parents), he embarks on a journey of self-discovery. He leaves no stone unturned in his quest to discover his heritage, the answers for which appear to lie with a rock pendant he was given as a child. After endless yeah nah’s, his tech-savvy mate at One NZ finally has a useful answer for him, and so begins his trip to Scotland.

There’s clearly a lot more in store for this campaign, but if the reaction of Lochboon Stone & Gems’ owner is anything to go by, Jade’s on the right path. And with strong casting choices having already created a family of characters to love, Ayson might be at the helm of a new Kiwi classic.
