Red (sauce) alert! | |
by Andrew MacGregor | |
|
There's a great scene in 'Goodfellas' where Jimmy Conway (Robert de Niro) happens to put ketchup on his spaghetti. Deprecabile! Before the credits roll, Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) bemoans that he got egg noodles and ketchup instead of spaghetti and marinara sauce. In Martin Scorsese's 1990 classic, red sauce was a red flag. There's more cause for concern in this Nando's commercial, as a woman positively drowns her pasta in the red stuff. She looks like an eater in her element, but her friends look like they've witnessed a murder. The twist is that she uses peri-ketchup—much more agreeable to the South African restaurant's target market.
