Molson
'Fences'
26 April 2024 60s
Offensive manoeuvres.
by Andrew MacGregor

No fence is safe in this Molson commercial from agency Rethink and director Bastian Glaessner. Like the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy ('Shaun of the Dead', 'Hot Fuzz', and 'The World's End'), the ad takes a dim view of fences; they just get in the way of a good party, right?

The twentysomething protagonist knocks the first one over by accident, and it looks as though the grizzled dominoes players next door will tear him a new one. Instead, they welcome the fellow Molsonites with open arms. What happens to the other fences in the neighbourhood? That's right—they fall like dominoes.

This would never happen in real life, of course, but beer brands are always such a jolly optimistic bunch with infectious commercials to boot. Molson would love it if everyone just got along this summer, and if an evil garden gnome happens to get crushed along the way, even better.
