Kat Penkin
'15'
8 July 2024 4 mins 12s

'15' by Kat Penkin goes back to when she was diagnosed with an eating disorder. Before that, though, she was seen as "just another silly girl on a diet". The Australian singer and songwriter is in a better place now, but her teenage self deserves to be acknowledged and understood.

"You say you like my thighs, but I think they're ugly/Just focus on my eyes and don't touch my tummy," she sings, trapped on a treadmill of guilt, self-hatred, and skipped meals. She wants to get off, but her anorexia makes that impossible.

The protagonist of Harry Tomlin's music video runs on a literal treadmill, desperate to keep her weight as low as possible as her parents argue over what to do. Birdie Wright, Michelle Robertson, and Simon Richardson convey the tumult so well.

Penkin then appears as a woman who sees the protagonist, who knows that look on her face and reads her like a book from her teenage years. '15' wants the protagonist and others like her to remember they are not alone.
