Shake a Tail Feather
by Jason Stone

On Mother London's watch, KFC have exhibited an astonishing willingness to draw attention to the animals used to create the food on offer at the fast food chain. It blasts right through the cognitive dissonance of the modern meat-eater, and it doesn't quite make sense that it works as well as it does.

It's ironic that this surreal and highly stylised commercial should also be part of a campaign that is so daring in its truthfulness about KFC's proposition. Or, to put it another way, look away, vegans... you're not going to like this.

Director Vedran Rupic brings the idea to life, and the resulting commercial beings to mind scenes from John Landis's 1980 movie 'The Blues Brothers' when whole streets of people are joining in a beautiful choreographed sequence... and, indeed, the Michael Jackson 'thriller' video from the same director.

The twist is that Rupin's dancers are replicating the moves of the humble feathered bird, which brings a comic frisson to the film culminating in its chicken-worshipping finale.

Special mention to music supervisor John Connon at Mr Pape for the role he played in securing the perfect track for this ad... it wouldn't be half as good without it.
