The Temptations sang it in 1969 and then Edwin Starr in 1970: "War… what is it good for? Absolutely nothin'!" Over fifty years later, Hozier presents his own anti-war song, with a pinch of anti-capitalism for good measure. The Irishman puts some welly into 'Nobody’s Soldier', an uptempo downer that touches on desensitisation ("Sick to my skin/Watching thе news again") and the war economy ("Choose between being a salesman and a soldier"). Horns blare as Hozier tears into his guitar, eager to drown out the bombs and the gunfire. In Daniel Ryan's promo, he plays both himself and a dollmaker who makes war plastic fantastic. Shots of bullets and synthetic body parts on a conveyor belt might not be subtle, but perhaps the time for subtlety is over.
