Are friends electric? | |

Google's 'Best Phones Forever' campaign casts the Pixel 9 Pro as the smartphone and the Apple iPhone as the dim-witted friend. The latter's only ever seen from behind to keep the lawyers happy, so iOS is AWOL throughout. It takes a few attempts to get the iPhone's attention… and it's all thanks to a calculator in Barcelona called Guillermo. He sent a postcard written in binary, the sweetheart, but the iPhone has no idea what to write back. Whether you enjoy the conversation that follows or not depends on your tolerance of the AI voice. It’s a lot of dialogue for synthetic voices to deliver, and it’s almost too much in the end. Still, we like the idea that a smartphone needs prompts like the couple in 'Monty Python's The Meaning of Life'.
