Gemma Rogers
'Death Knocked Up'
18 July 2024 3 mins 11s

Over the years, Death has been portrayed by Bengt Ekerot in 'The Seventh Seal', William Sadler in 'Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey', and Brad Pitt in 'Meet Joe Black', to name but a few. With the promo for 'Death Knocked Up' by Gemma Rogers, Clea Martin becomes the latest actor to play the Grim Reaper.

Her Death lives on a council estate and uses a smartphone instead of a scythe. She takes photos of every fatality and sends them to her boss, Father Time, who replies with a thumbs-up or a "good job". Drug use, violence, and self-harm are rife on the estate, so Death always meets her quota.

She even has time to have sex with a bloke she meets on the street. He kicks the bucket, of course, but at least he died happy. Death, meanwhile, is shocked to learn she's pregnant—in this line of work, new life is a real drag.

She becomes less vicious and more vulnerable, hounded by a supernatural boss who only cares about results. If she can't do the job, maybe her child can. When paired with Rogers's sharp, observational lyrics about zero-hour contracts and social inequality you realise that not even Death is safe from the human condition.
