Third time's the harm.
by Andrew MacGregor

To mark the release of 'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice' on September 6, used vehicle retailer CarMax warn viewers about a rival operation. Turn right instead of left on a particular stretch of road and you end up at BeetleMax, which sounds like a home video format risen from the grave.

Everyone's favourite bio-exorcist is nowhere to be seen in this commercial (save for a couple of background visuals), which lets a shrunken head take centre stage for once. That should be a red flag right away, but the family are encouraged to say BeetleMax three times to get a special discount.

Dark forces compel them to sing a new take on 'Day-O (The Banana Boat Song)', with lyrics like : "We can't give you CarMax’s peace of mind, but will give you an actual piece of mind!" It may be against their will, but the rigor mortis choreography is spot-on.

Same goes for the art direction and costume design, the latter courtesy of 'Beetlejuice' alumnus Colleen Atwood. It's a shame to leave spooky Americana behind, but the brand need to show viewers the right way to buy used cars in the real world.
