Big heads in the game
by Melissa Roberts

Barclays have renewed their sponsorship of the Premier League, by getting the most important people together in a room to sign on the dotted line. Seeing team mascots walk into (or try to) the bank’s HQ, and act in accordance with these unfamiliar corporate surroundings, creates a rather innocently childlike form of comedy that’s pure enjoyment to watch.

The mockumentary style suits the unconventional approach to the sponsorship deal announcement, and allows for an Ian Wright cameo as he spots an old Gunners mate. There’s also a quick zoom in on a poster noting the bank’s ‘record breaking achievement in women’s sport’, as a nod to its doubled investment in the Women’s Super League and Championships through to 2028.

With a recent Visa spot tracing the origin story of the NFL Pittsburgh Steelers’ Steely McBeam, it seems now is the mascots’ time in the floodlight.
