'Typisch Deutsch'

Auf Wiedersehen... but not yet.
by Andrew MacGregor

This superb commercial for Adidas marks the beginning of the end of an era. After seventy-plus years as Germany’s official kit supplier, Adidas will make way for Nike in 2027. Before then, the company founded by Adolf Dassler want to have as much fun as possible before it's three stripes and you're out.

'Typisch Deutsch' nails the brief in that regard. When a fan says Germany’s Euro 2024 kit is "typical German", it sparks a tongue-in-cheek probe into national stereotypes, clichés, and habits. Thought public transport was punctual? Let a skeleton in a business suit correct you.

The conceit goes into overdrive with an apartment block full of Thomas Müllers (it is the most common surname in Germany, after all), followed by a techno track that may replace 'Deutschlandlied' one day. Success for the national team has been, erm, atypical since 2014, but this is a great call to arms and feet.
