'Yum'
6 March 2023 3 mins 25s

Fans of Trainspotting will appreciate this darkly surreal promo for slowthai's 'Yum'. Kicking off with an onscreen message about addictions eating you up, the film opens with the rapper standing in an open field, clutching a toddler and fending off a panic attack as he's charged at by a horde of women in underwear. Things only get weirder from there.

This is a deeply discomforting watch, as it explores the trauma-informed, psycho-sexual recesses of the artist's mind. A montage of drugged out moments is interspersed with images of a therapist-cum-mother figure, and one memorable shot sees slowthai tarred and feathered - sporting a sign which reads 'this man can't be helped'.

It's not a fun piece of work, and it isn't supposed to be. Offering a raw and spellbinding insight into a mind gripped with a never-ending quest for more - sex, drugs, stimulation - it will be painfully, emotionally familiar to many watching. Kudos to directors Crowns & Owls for immersing their unflinching lens fully in the filth.
