Like Martin Luther King Jr, Walmart had a dream: to reunite the Plastics from 'Mean Girls' for a Black Friday commercial. They got three-quarters of the way there in the end, with Lindsay Lohan (Cady Heron), Lacey Chabert (Gretchen Wieners), and Amanda Seyfried (Karen Smith) on board. No sign of Rachel McAdams as Regina George though.

The ad must also compete with the trailer for, erm, 'Mean Girls'—the film based on the musical based on the film based on a self-help book. No one talks about the 2011 straight-to-video sequel, so this two-minute spot from agency Publicis New York and director Lucia Aniello may become the default follow-up.

Like Cher Horowitz in Rakuten's Super Bowl LVII commercial, Cady, Gretchen, and Karen have stuck to what they know: high school. That's why Cady is a guidance counsellor, Gretchen is a mum who still wants to make "fetch" happen, and Karen is a weather reporter who also promotes Walmart's early Black Friday deals ("There's a thirty per cent chance it's already Wednesday").

The new Plastics also get their moment to shine with a burst of 'Jingle Bell Rock', but it's the old guard people want to see. We doubt they came cheap either, so the retailer must want a bumper Black Friday off the back of this.
