Poignant Predictions | |

This atmospheric film from the United Nations makes it abundantly clear how urgent the climate emergency really is. It uses the words of scientific visionary Carl Sagan, who was raising the alarm about global warming and the greenhouse effect back in the Eighties. As we're well aware - the vast majority of people failed to listen back then. His warnings are played on a reel-to-reel tape recorder, which powers several clockwork animals as its spools run. A child watches on with awe and a touch of horror, trying to comprehend the idea that proper adults with developed brains would have ignored the issue for this long. There's a continually tricky balancing act when it comes to making the public care about climate change: go too lighthearted, and it feels downplayed; go too serious, and people feel like there's no point in trying as we're doomed anyway. This achieves something more subtle than sheer terror, but sparks a driving anxiety which should encourage those watching to take action.
