A Link to the past. | |

Almost six years after the release of 'The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild', its sequel, 'Tears of the Kingdom', is upon us. It's come at the right time for the bloke in this bittersweet commercial, as he's lost the bounce from his metaphorical bungee. He commutes to and from work every day on the bus, unable to muster more than a sigh. That changes when he finds a copy of the advertised game at home (we like to think his wife bought him it) and throws himself into Hyrule's cel-shaded open world. Many video game ads resort to OTT reactions and forced cheer, but not this one. The protagonist thinks out loud as he tries to cross the sea on a makeshift raft - when one log fails, he attaches a sail to it. When that fails, he adds another log and voila! It's a lovely, naturalistic demonstration of the game's Fuse mechanic, which lets players 'glue' objects together. It enlivens his bus journey no end, and prompts a sigh of contentment at long last. Grown-ups don't lose their sense of adventure forever, say Nintendo - they just need the right tools.
