Temptations
'The Armstrong Sisters'
15 November 2023 40s
A duet to forget.
by Andrew MacGregor

The Armstrong Sisters thought they were a shoe-in for Christmas number one with 'Deck the Halls'—until someone let a cat on the set. Agency adam&eveDDB and director Jeff Low take us back to the fictional duo's 1970s heyday, when flares and pencil microphones were the height of fashion.

They get off to a jolly good start, but when the cat tries its paw at the piano, it sounds like claws on a chalkboard. The blonde Armstrong tries to keep calm and carry on with mixed results, while her brunette sibling sticks to what she knows best: "Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la."

It's a cosy disaster thanks to the warm grade and period-accurate production design, overseen by a pitiless stage manager who wants this done in one take. Good thing someone brought a pack of Temptations Creamy Purée to the studio, eh?
