Life in the North Pole is tough, so it's unsurprising when, as soon as Father Christmas has lift-off, his elves want a break from snow and ice. Thus, TUI's first Christmas ad (Ant & Dec just missed out on that honour) blends pointy hats and stripy socks with pool toys and sun loungers.

Set to 'Livin' la Vida Loca' by Ricky Martin, the spot uses dinky handmade puppets courtesy of Arch Model Studio, and the decision pays off big time. It means that elves cling on to sails for dear life, or dive bomb into the pool with a humorous plop.

This is the kind of idea that lives or dies in the execution, and by awarding the work to director Alex Boutell and Arch Model Studio, Leo Burnett ensured their elves had the best time possible. Human passengers take up more room on flights, sure, but that matters not one jolt to TUI this Christmas.
