Good call? | |
by Andrew MacGregor | |
|
June (Alison Fitzjohn) reckons the whole world is out to get her. No one believes her except You're Absolutely Right - a chat line that offers callers instant validation. When she thinks her house is bugged, she rings up and is put through to the always encouraging operator (Andrew Goddard), who sounds like a protégé of the classically trained actor from Monkey Dust. The back-and-forth between the two is excellent: her dialogue revolves around a conspiracy involving Rosco supermarkets, while his is employee of the month material ("You're right! A supermarket that size could watch you twenty-four-bloody-seven"). Yet when her paranoia turns to the postman, the operator's tone changes somewhat. We won't spoil the ending, but directors Ian Bousher and Theo Gee push the, erm, envelope as far as it will go. Next time someone you know needs some encouragement, choose you words carefully—the Junes and Charlie Kellys of this world are walking powder kegs.
