This poignant short film offers a painful yet relatable look at the power of remembering those we've lost. 'The Diver' follows the story of Yasuo Takamatsu, who lost his wife in the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami and continues to search the ocean for her remains twelve years later. There's a restrained dignity to director Anderson Wright's visuals, as he gives his subject space to explain his struggles in his own words. Brief snippets of archival footage of Takamatsu's wife add a visceral dimension to the tale, making her absence feel like an even bigger spectre in the film. A particularly touching moment sees the subject affectionately relate his wife's jumpiness at small scares, throwing into stark relief just how much suffering he's tamping down during his stoic delivery. This is raw and really honest work, inviting viewers to help hold the weight of unimaginable grief for the duration of watching.
