'Pacemaker' tells the story of Cody (Alex Newell) and his grandfather (Philip Lawrence), not long after the former transitioned. He used to be Becca, but Grandpa's quite not on the same wavelength yet. Then there's the small matter of his new heart—the pacemaker of the title. Nothing's resolved before Grandpa's operation, and he balks at Cody's crush on a girl. These thoughts swirl around his head though, even when unconscious. That's when animation directors Brian Vincent Rhodes and Christopher Lennertz deliver on their promise of a pro-trans musical. There are hints of 'Up' and 'Soul' as Grandpa revisits the moment he met the love of his life, Ynez, at the school dance many years ago. Shadowy figures disapprove of the mixed-race couple, but love—you guessed it—conquers all. He wakes up with a new lease of life and a new perspective, just in time for Cody’s football match. Subtle it ain’t, but the film's message of love and acceptance across generations is hard to resist.
