It's genuinely astounding that fifty-three years after the breakup of The Beatles, the two remaining members of the band can generate so much publicity after building a track around a remnant of music recorded by John Lennon and found on a cassette tape in the 1990s. On the day that 'Now and Then' was released, there was major coverage about it on news bulletins throughout the day. Unsurprisingly, the track isn't up to much, but this super twelve minute mini-documentary about the making of the song makes the whole thing worthwhile. Writer/director Oliver Murray has used archive footage; interviews from the 1990s when George Harrison contributed to this project; and contemporary interviews with Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr in a fashion that really explains how and, importantly, why this track came to be. After watching this, DAVID feels a lot less bothered by the mediocrity of 'Now and Then' because, ultimately, this project is not about the song itself so much so much as the way it is the final full stop in the story of the most important pop band of all time.
