'I Am In Control'
8 March 2023 9 mins 17s
Emotional Emission
by Syd Briscoe

This witty satire of modern culture takes aim at a broad swathe of personal and social foibles via an unexpected medium. 'I Am In Control' follows a pair of couples as they spend the weekend together, with one duo opening the conversation by announcing that they have given up that most animal of human behaviours - defecation.

The bizarre explanation offered for this trendy fad is almost believable in its pseudo-scientific inanity, as waffling about predators and evolution convinces half of the other couple to join in on the efforts. The weekend rapidly begins to unravel, and it becomes apparent that maintaining our animal side should sit a little higher up the priority list.

This is sharply written work, with even incidental conversations (a tangent about restaurants, prefaced with the assertion that the speaker was once a waiter) ridiculing small talk, mundane complaints, and the vapidity of modern life. The final scene is silly, slapstick, and provides much-needed catharsis... both narratively and, for one character, physically.
