Aesthetic Anarchy
by Syd Briscoe

Art and its anxieties are addressed directly in this fun short film for the Sainsbury Centre. The piece draws attention to an unusual upcoming fiftieth anniversary exhibition at the gallery, which encourages visitors to interact with the exhibits and see art as something alive and vital... not just an object to be put on a pedestal and stared at.

Director LIAKH understands the assignment perfectly here, lampooning a traditional gallery environment with rapid-fire cuts and colourful imagery which speaks to the institution's anarchic approach. It makes the prospect of a visit feel fresh and exciting - something which can be a tough ask in a usually static industry.

A really interesting aspect of the film is its emphasis on not using critical terms which are common in the art world, but can actually be quite offensive in context. By what standard does a piece of art become 'controversial' in 2023? And the less said about 'ethnic' art in a country which still refuses to return its Empire plunder... the better.
