Ratbag
'Exit Girl'
30 November 2023 3 mins 35s

Auckland native Ratbag - aka Sophie Brown - has a unique sound and aesthetic which has made her hugely popular online. Creating her own idiosyncratic brand of shoegaze, she's accompanied by an animated band of monsters which she made up, reflecting her start in visual arts and ongoing commitment to the weird and wonderful.

She's been described as 'Gorillaz meets Neil Gaiman', and that's a fitting take on the claustrophobic promo for 'Exit Girl'. The audience is kept constantly off kilter from the word go, with shifting camera angles, flashing lights, and terrifying shadows suggesting there's no way out of this intoxicated nightmare.

Flares of animation bring a feverish sense of whimsy to the piece, with it remaining unclear whether any of the animated or live action creatures are friend or foe. Director Frances Carter makes judicious use of blood and guts at the film's climax, leaving the viewer to wonder whether what they've witnessed was a hallucination... or just the way nights out end in New Zealand.
