PETA
'Tessa the Turkey'
13 November 2023 90s
So you had a bird day.
by Andrew MacGregor

To say PETA had qualms about Christmas would be an understatement. Turkey, goose, ham, beef… every year, the charity get meat sweats through sheer anxiety. Ideal subject matter for an animated musical, don't you think?

Jane Horrocks (The Rise and Fall of Little Voice) plays Tessa, a turkey interested in all the weird and wonderful traditions upheld by humans at Christmas: mistletoe, letters to Santa, festive jumpers, et cetera. So many of this year's festive crop have been about change though, and PETA's is no exception.

They want turkeys like Tessa to be spared their annual fate (represented here as a factory run by a crazed Santa with gold teeth and zero empathy). As Tessa becomes an ex-turkey, the ad encourages viewers ignore the deadlines for Christmas poultry—emphasis on the dead— and go vegan instead.
