When the sun goes down, singer-songwriter Oliver Pash becomes Mr Pash's Midnight, a lovesick crooner with a taste for Japanese whisky. Alone in his room at the Walpole Bay Hotel, he pours himself a glass of Hatozaki and claims, "I never wanted to be a lonely man/But in the end it doesn't bother me". That's not entirely true though, as Pash remembers "watercolour painting in the bay" and when "we got locked out in the rain" between sips. Whoever joined him on the seafront those times is long gone, but he's not ready to blow out the candle just yet. Since this is Pash's private 'party', director Lily Rose Thomas adopts the rule of one: one character, one location, and one long take. The result is an economical ode to lost love set in Margate's own Heartbreak Hotel.
