It's tricky to make a promo which focuses on performance footage visually engaging for anyone but hardcore fans - especially when dealing with an ageing band who are no longer particularly dynamic onstage - but Tim Saccenti manages it in this intriguing promo for Metallica's 'Screaming Suicide'. While the lyrics focus on breaking down taboos around mentioning suicide and mental ill health in general, Saccenti's murky visuals provide insight in a distressed mindset. Blooms of dissolving paint and jerky filters on frontman James Hetfield's face add layers of interest, while a black and white palette indicates a life sapped of enjoyment and colour. The song is standard Metallica fare, which is unsurprising as they haven't established a long and storied career in heavy metal via sonic innovation. Fans new and old will appreciate the song's sentiment though, as a growing wave of compassion for mental illness penetrates even the most conservative of the 'rebellious' music genres.
