'The Instrument'
31 October 2023 2 mins 54s
The keys to her heart.
by Andrew MacGregor

Part of us would love to see a headset commercial that showed the, erm, reality of virtual reality (VR): motion sickness, broken furniture, and crushed pets. The wait goes on thanks to this Meta Quest commercial, which, to be fair, weaves a lovely story about family, music, and procrastination.

The protagonist wants to learn to play the piano like her grandmother, but has neither the space nor the money to buy one. Her partner surprises her with the next best thing: the Meta Quest 3. Her goal is to master 'Take Five' by the Dave Brubeck Quartet, which is easier said than done in any reality.

Progress is slow but steady, though when the bum notes stack up, she lets off steam with games like 'Beat Saber' and 'Lego Bricktales'. There's a lovely moment when the partner realises she's not at the virtual Joanna and plays air piano to get her back on track.

The more she practises, the more complete 'Take Five' sounds in the background. Her first gig is—you guessed it—a duet with her grandmother, who reacts like it's the best gift imaginable. It's weapons-grade schmaltz, for sure, but jazzy schmaltz often goes down better.
