Quirky art collective Meow Wolf announce their latest exhibition with this hyperreal commercial. The piece harnesses Nineties-style ad imagery, pairing bright colours and enthusiastic characters with weird visual twists which suggest a normal retail trip definitely isn't on the cards at this shopping mall. The film is less a straightforward critique of commercialism than a hot take on the concept of reality itself - something viewers familiar with the bizarre collective will know is standard practice. Wacky photoshoots with talking dolls exist comfortably alongside human-sized rats and polyester-clad fitness enthusiasts, while a mannequin coming to life is the most normal part of the whole exercise. A giant sculpture opening up to transport the whole cast into another dimension seems like a fitting end to proceedings, though no such escape from our ludicrous reality is promised to those who attend the exhibition. This is zany, creepy, and dimensionally unsettling work... so just the sort of thing fans love to see from the anarchic artists.
