Come, pain, feed on me.
by Andrew MacGregor

MTV draw inspiration from Virginia Woolf for their Women's History Month ad. The narrator reads an excerpt from Woolf's 1931 novel, 'The Waves', that says: “But for pain words are lacking." Flesh is gashed, blood spurts, and joints are twisted in this passage, but words do little justice to what the multigenerational cast go through.

Motherhood, puberty, old age, and the menopause all cause women to endure pain that's under-researched, misdiagnosed, mistreated, and/or ignored by medical science. Though director Sindha Agha's film pops with colour, there are more shades of discomfort and isolation.

There's also palpable resilience that inspires MTV to say, "We see you". Of course, what the brand really want to see is more research into reproductive or gynaecological health problems and less male bias in medicine.
