Käärijä
'It's Crazy, It's Party'
18 September 2023 3 mins 52s

Finnish Eurovision act Käärijä was dubbed 'the People's Princess' during the 2023 competition, winning the hearts of both the public and other competitors with his cheerful attitude, inspiring story, and arguably the catchiest tune to come out of the ESC in years. Many have cried foul about his convenient defeat (on jury votes only) by the Swedish entry - just in time for ABBA's 50th anniversary performance - but it hasn't slowed the idiosyncratic rapper's rise to fame.

New single 'It's Crazy, It's Party' features Estonian rapper Tommy Cash, and the accompanying promo transports viewers into a surreal, horror-tinged version of the pair's origin story. Cash seems content to gurn gleefully, like something out of The Hills Have Eyes in a codpiece, while Käärijä sports his distinctive green bolero and is accompanied by a crew of shaven-headed associates on his trip through the night.

It's strange, it's more than slightly incoherent, and it's very European. There's the distinct sense of an artist who wants to break out of his box (physically, in this case), but is stuck relying on the visual language which so recently made him famous. Having already tested the limits of rigid Finnish masculinity on an international stage, it'll be interesting to see what the rapper comes up with when his public goodwill for being robbed of an ESC win fades.
