'Dirt in the Diamond'
1 June 2023 20 mins 36s

'Dirt in the Diamond', the debut album by Jords, comes with a twenty-minute short film directed by Renee Maria Osubu. Inspired by Jamaican mourning rituals like nine night – a celebration held before the funeral – the film centres on a family united in grief and joy after the death of Isaac.

The pre-wake is scored by 'MoBaby', a track made for mellow, emotional nights, while the funeral is accompanied by 'iPray', which explores why people still each out to a higher power ("It's funny how in our time of need we pray the most/Especially when we're layin' low"). Osubu ensures both vignettes brim with authenticity.

She changes tack in the final stretch, as the funeral gives way to a bullish montage of civil rights protests through the decades. It suits 'Fist in the Sky' down to the ground, and shows how strength is gained from friends, family, and strangers alike.
