Homespun Yarns
'Travelling Home'
18 November 2023 5 mins 58s
The road more travelled.
by Jason Stone

For her contribution to this year's Homespun Yarns, director Juliet Klottrup pointed her cameras at Joe Cannon Snr, a 73 year old Traveller who offers an upbeat assessment of life on the road. Klottrup switches between what appears to be a Super 8 camera and something more modern to achieve a stylistic difference and, to suggest an enduring antiquity to the Traveller lifestyle.

What it lacks in meaningful insight, it more than makes up for with the modest charm of its protagonist, a man who, despite having a lot to say, appears to be on the brink of adding "I have no idea what's so interesting about me" at any moment.Klottrup and her cinematographer Sam Finney make the Yorkshire countryside Cannon's co-star, and it all adds up to a pleasant meander through his life.
