Homespun Yarns
'Banana Boat'
18 November 2023 5 mins 31s
Class war.
by Jason Stone

Writer/Director Holly Hunter's film 'Banana Boat' won the most votes from the audience at this year's Homespun Yarns, and Hunter was duly given the big prize. Her film is a comedy sketch featuring two mothers trying to secure the final berths aboard the banana boat of the title for themselves and their progeny. Most of the comedy which follows derives from their class-based disdain for one another.

The premise provides a good foundation, and some of the resulting gags deliver on its promise, but a bit more work on the script might have delivered a film that was funny from start to finish instead of intermittently.

The set up for the punchline slips slyly past the audience, enabling Hunter to land it without blowing her budget out of the water... as the denouement is left largely to our imagination..
